Rare Norfolk Goose Crook

SOLD

Code: 12000

Dimensions:

W: 9.5cm (3.7")H: 84cm (33.1")D: 2cm (0.8")

Geese were bred in Norfolk. They were walked through tar and grit to shod their feet and then walked all the way to London (Smithfield's Market) on foot using the drover's routes. This took approx 2 weeks.

This crook is small, light weight and delicate to use. Its knob finial is typical of Norfolk/Lincolnshire design and is on it's original shorty hand staff which is ribbed. Sometimes a pig's bladder was inflated and hung like a football from a string from a stick or the end of the crook. The swinging of this was the right coaxing action to get the geese moving without flumoxing them.

These crooks are very scarce. The only reason I am selling this one is I have similar design in my collection.
