Shos and shoe leather was expensive in the 19th century hence professions such as a drain digger or gardener would fix a diiging iron under their shoe to save wearing the shoe soles away.
This has been blacksmith made and the original leather sides are intact too. Good early example of a bygone era.
There are examples of these in the shoe museum in Northampton.
