The Sugar Loaf: Before granulated sugar and sugar cubes became common in the late 19th century, refined sugar was sold as hard, solid cones called "sugar loaves" These needed cutting into chunks before being crushed (or granulated) with a pestle and mortar. This example is early and table mounted so it can be done using just one hand. It has its original mahogany base and wonderful brass fittings and turned handle etc.
