19th Cent English Shepherd's Horn Lantern

Original 19th cent English Shepherd's Lantern. The shepherd's preferred horn lanterns as they were less likely to break if a sheep kicked it, unlike a glass one that could smash and set light to the fold.

All the windows have the original horn in place and windows are still good and strong.

Door hinges and original candle sconce are intact also. The roof has smoke hole vents. There is some inherent damage at the top of the roof vent and this has been wired long ago to keep the carring handle together. Everything is original.

The base is intact. The side windows have vertical struts. The word 'Lantern' derived from 'LANT HORN' when hand lamp windows were made from cow's horn. When you light these early lanterns you are recreating the sulphur yellow lantern light of lambing in a sheep fold.

These lanterns are rarely seen now in such good condition.
