Early and primitive form of cottage lighting, this simple wick lamp would have hung from a hook or ledge in a cottage and provided a meagre amount of light in its simplest form. It is worth noting that candles were very expensive, hence simple lamps like this were used. Filled with a small amount of fish oil or similar, one or two wicks or tapers would hand over the edge and burn with a flame.
It could be hung now with a nightlight candle too.
