19th Cent Copper Match/Spill holder
Very nice decorated copper wall mounted match holder with Repoussé decoration of dogs, birds and musical instuments.
This is the only time I have seen such an object in copper, they are almost always brass and termed Dutch style as it was the Dutch who perfected this decorative punchwork and exported it to the UK very much in the 1600s to early 1800s. the copper lid is hinged and lifts up. Under the box is an area that looks like it could take a piece of sand paper as a match strike.
