A cannula is also used in an emergency procedure to relieve pressure and bloating in cattle and sheep due most commonly to their accidentally grazing pastures too rich in the likes of red and white clover. The sharp knife is thrust into the animal's side and then the tube like sheath stays in place to hold the wound open rather like deflating a balloon. This saves the animal from a painful death.
