Every poor person kept a pig in the country fed on scraps. Once the pig was killed it was rolled in hot ashes to singe the bristles. The pig was then scraped to remove these using a hand scraper.

These early examples rarely turn up. It is made from a cow's hoof with an iron blade attached. It fits into the palm of the hand perfectly.
