Rare 19th Cent Oast House Sulphur Pan

Code: 11303     Dimensions:H 120cm (47.2")

Sold

Only the second one of these I have had in over 30 years! This long handled iron pan would have been used to colour the hops when drying in an Oast house. Sulphur was burnt in the kiln during drying to improve the colour and flavour of the hops, 10-20 lbs of sulphur per load. It was banned by law twice in the 18th Century but the practice continued” beneath the noses of the law”
